Description

An authentic, substantial Roman Imperial Bronze Sestertius struck under Emperor Septimius Severus (AD 193–211) at the Rome mint.

This piece boasts a highly robust, traditional 19.38g imperial fabric, featuring a distinctive mature portrait of the military emperor and a classic personification reverse type.

Design & Diagnostic Details:

  • Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Septimius Severus facing right. His signature tightly curled hair and prominent beard profile remain clearly identifiable. The Latin legend traces show elements of his imperial titles, with SEV visible.

  • Reverse: SECVRITAS PVBLICA / S — C (in fields). Securitas (the personification of public security and empire-wide stability) sits comfortably left upon a low throne, extending her right hand to hold a globe.

  • Provenance: Formerly in the collection/inventory of Locke & England Auctions.
