Item Description

Authentic Roman Republic Silver Denarius — Struck under Moneyer C. Vibius C.f. Pansa, 90 BC

Up for sale is an attractive, solid example of a classic Roman Republican silver denarius. Weighing in at an excellent 3.94 grams, this piece boasts an impressive, heavy feel on a compact, solid flan with striking contrast.

Provenance: This piece comes with regional UK auction heritage, sourced Ex-Golding Young & Mawer.

Design & Iconography:
  • Obverse : Laureate head of Apollo facing right, features stylized thick, heavy curls of hair cascading down his neck. The moneyer's name PANSA is cleanly visible running upwards behind the head.

  • Reverse ): A highly dynamic scene featuring the Roman goddess Minerva driving a fast quadriga (four-horse chariot) galloping to the right. She holds a spear and reins, with a victory trophy visible over her shoulder. The family lineage marker C•VIBIVS•C•F (Gaius Vibius, Gaii filius) is perfectly preserved and incredibly crisp within the exergue.

Condition & Eye Appeal:

  • Details: The obverse has a slightly tight flan that closely trims the top of Apollo's laurel wreath, yet keeps the key PANSA legend fully present. The reverse boasts exceptional centering, capturing the entirety of the racing horses and leaving the crucial exergue legend remarkably clear, unclipped, and easy to read. Beautiful dark cabinet toning clings to the fields, providing wonderful, high-contrast definition to the raised elements.
