    Up for auction/sale is an honest, well-attributed example of an Elizabethan hammered silver penny, struck at the Tower Mint during the crucial monetary reforms of her early reign.

    Design Details:

    • Obverse: Crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth I facing left (without the rose behind the head, diagnostic of the penny denomination). Clear cross crosslet mintmark + E D G ROSA SINE SPINA (Elizabeth by the grace of God, a rose without a thorn).

    • Reverse: Long cross fourchée over a quartered royal shield. Clear cross crosslet mintmark at 12 o'clock. Legend: + CIVI TAS LON DON (City of London).
