Elagabalus (AD 218-222) Roman Provincial AE Tetrassarion
Mint: Marcianopolis, Moesia Inferior | Magistrate: Julius Antonius Seleucus Up for auction/sale is a beautifully preserved ancient Roman Provincial large bronze Tetrassarion (AE 25) struck under the infamous young emperor Elagabalus in the Balkan city of Marcianopolis. This specimen boasts a remarkably sharp reverse depicting Asklepios, the god of medicine.
Obverse:AYT K M AYP ANTΩNEINOC. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus right, viewed from behind.
Reverse: YΠ IOYΛ ANT CEΛEYKOY MAPKIANOΠOΛITΩN. Asklepios standing facing, head left, resting hand upon a staff entwined with a serpent.
