    Description

An excellent, high-weight Charles I Hammered Silver Shilling struck at the Tower Mint, London, during the period of 1639–1640.

    Numismatic Notes:

    • Premium Weight: Weighing in at a robust 6.15 grams, this specimen sits comfortably above the standard theoretical mint weight (approx. 6.02g). It features an unclipped, full round flan—highly desirable for collectors of English hammered silver.

    • Mintmark: The Triangle (Δ) mintmark is clearly visible at the 12 o'clock position on both the obverse and reverse faces.

    • Condition: The coin displays an incredibly crisp and sharp reverse shield featuring the detailed quarters of England, France, Scotland, and Ireland. The obverse portrait exhibits some honest, typical central softness but retains a full, clear crown and a beautifully complete legend. It boasts excellent, uncleaned golden-grey toning with solid eye appeal and no surface porosity.

    Inscriptions:

    • Obverse Legend : CAROLVS D G MAG BRI FRA ET HI REX (Charles by the Grace of God King of Great Britain France and Ireland)

    • Reverse Legend : CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO (I reign under the auspices of Christ)

    Provenance

    • Ex-Harper Fields Auction.
