Exceptional 1903 Belgium Art Nouveau Commemorative Medal / Pendant

By Celebrated Belgian Sculptor & Medallist Fernand Dubois (1861–1939)

An exquisite and substantial piece of authentic Belle Époque medallic art. This irregular, organic shield-shaped pendant features striking high-relief detail and classic "whiplash" architectural framing characteristic of the peak Art Nouveau period.

Issued by the Municipality of Ixelles (Brussels) to commemorate the "Cortège des Fleurs" (Flower Parade) held over three Sundays in June 1903.

Design Details

• Obverse : Features a beautifully modeled, dynamic allegorical female figure (Flora or Spring) walking left, partially draped in flowing, diaphanous fabric that swirls into the background. Her left arm is outstretched, holding a flowering branch. Signed "FERNAND DUBOIS" in the lower right field, alongside his small stylized artistic monogram box [FD].

• Reverse : Features the outer inscription "COMMUNE D'IXELLES" with a central circular medallion reading "CORTÈGE DES FLEURS / 14 • 21 • 28 / JUIN / 1903". Below sits a highly textured depiction of an Alder tree, the traditional heraldic symbol and namesake of Ixelles. Re-stamped with the [FD] artist's monogram in the lower right corner.
