Up for sale/auction is a spectacular piece of maritime history: an 1808 East India Company copper 10 Cash piece. Struck at Matthew Boulton's legendary Soho Mint in Birmingham, this coin was destined for use in the Madras Presidency of British India.

This exact coin is a genuine survivor from the historic shipwreck of the **East Indiaman *Admiral Gardner***, which sank during a ferocious storm on the Goodwin Sands off the coast of Kent on January 24, 1809. 

Because this coin was packed tightly in wax-sealed wooden barrels within the ship's hold, it was protected from two centuries of harsh marine erosion. It retains incredibly crisp, near-uncirculated design details, heavily complemented by a striking, deep iridescent marine patina and colorful toning that is entirely unique to shipwreck copper.
