William The Lion Scotland Silver Cut Quarter Short Cross & Stars Hue Walter
£20.00
An excellent, crisply struck medieval silver cut quarter penny of William I ("The Lion") of Scotland (1165–1214), struck during the joint moneyer period of Hue and Walter.
This fragment dates from the iconic Short Cross and Stars Coinage (Phase B), produced between c. 1205 and 1230.While heavily influenced by the contemporary English Short Cross issues of Henry II–Henry III to aid cross-border trade, the Scottish issues are instantly recognized by their beautiful, sharp multi-pointed stars (mullets) rather than the standard English four-pellet clusters.
