Rare Nerva Roman Provincial Bronze (AE 25) – Flavia Neapolis, Samaria – Scarce Altar Type

Up for auction/sale is a fascinating and highly collectible Roman Provincial bronze coin struck during the brief reign of Emperor Nerva (96–98 AD) at the historic mint of Flavia Neapolis in Samaria. This issue is highly sought after by collectors of both Roman Provincial and Holy Land numismatics due to its intricate, architectural reverse design.

  • Obverse: Laureate head of Nerva right. Part of the Latin legend is clearly visible on the right field, reading PONT MAX (IMP NERVA CAES AVG PONT MAX...).

  • Reverse: A prominent, large rectangular city altar or shrine structure decorated with panels. Above the altar is a row of cult objects/sacrificial items. Flanking the altar are two figures (often identified as Victories or local deities) standing on columns/pedestals, reaching inward.

  • Reference: RPC III, 2484 / 2485 (Roman Provincial Coinage).

Numismatic Note: This is a highly honest specimen featuring a stable, dark olive-green/brown patina with some lighter highlighting on the high points. The monumental altar and flanking figures on the reverse are remarkably clear for this typically weakly struck issue, making it a great addition to any specialized collection.
