Ancient Roman Imperial Bronze As – Marcus Agrippa (Struck under Caligula, AD 37-41)
Smooth, Solid Surfaces & Strong Obverse Legend – RIC 58
Up for sale/auction is a highly attractive and fundamentally sound posthumous Roman Imperial Bronze As struck in honour of the legendary general Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Issued during the reign of his grandson, the Emperor Caligula (Gaius), this iconic issue was minted to reinforce the dynastic prestige of the early Julio-Claudian line.
Unlike many examples of this type which suffer from environmental pitting, this specimen features **completely solid, smooth, and non-porous surfaces**. It boasts a beautiful, uncleaned earthen and dark olive-green patina with stable natural mineral deposits that highlight the profile and legends beautifully.
The obverse displays an excellent portrait of Agrippa wearing his famous rostral crown, with an exceptionally crisp and sharp rendering of the final legend elements, specifically **"COS III"**. The reverse features a bold striking of the classic "S C" fields flanking Neptune. A wonderful, honest piece of Roman history for the discerning collector.
