      Design & Symbolism

      • Obverse (Front): Apollo, the god of music, truth, and prophecy. He is shown with a laurel wreath. This honors the famous Oracle of Apollo at Klaros, which was controlled by Kolophon and was one of the most prestigious religious sites in the ancient Greek world.

      • Reverse (Back): Forepart of a galloping horse. This is a direct reference to the "Kolophon Cavalry," which was considered the best in Ionia. The city was so famous for its cavalry finishing battles that their name became a synonym for "the finishing touch."

      • Inscription: KOΛ (KOL) is visible below the horse, identifying the city. A vertical name (Magistrate) is partially visible on the left.
