1808 10 Cash East India Company -ten coins

Up for auction/sale is a fantastic, high-grade cumulative dealer/collector lot of 10 genuine copper coins recovered from the famous wreck of the EIC Ship Admiral Gardner. These historic pieces were minted in 1808 at Matthew Boulton’s revolutionary steam-powered Soho Mint in Birmingham just months before their fateful voyage.

The History: On January 24, 1809, the Admiral Gardner set sail from London bound for Madras with a vital cargo of copper coins intended for local trade. Just hours into the journey, a violent storm drove the ship onto the treacherous Goodwin Sands in the English Channel, where she sank. The cargo remained lost to the sea for 175 years until a successful salvage operation in 1984 recovered a portion of the coins from tightly packed, iron-hooped barrels.
